I have a favorite podcast, and I listen to it often while walking. Lately, the podcast has speeded up. The hosts & guests are talking at frantic paces, and I decided that I just can’t listen to it at this pace. My de-stressing walks have become stressful! So just before I emailed the host, I had a thought- what if it was user-error on my part? Had I accidentally changed a setting on my phone that sped up the podcast? Sure enough, I had changed the speed. The problem wasn’t with the podcast, the problem is that I often start the podcast without my glasses on, and hit a wrong setting.
That did get me thinking though. It feels like everything has to be fast to be good right now. Recently, a client asked me to review a fast metabolism/fast burner diet plan. I can understand the frustration of not losing weight when trying to, and possibly jump-starting a health plan with something new. But… Have we not learned? Let’s do some review. Fast food typically is not good. (Some exceptions to this rule). Fast eating- for sure it’s not good. When we eat fast, we can easily over-eat. Foods that need to be chewed like apples and veggies, can’t be eaten so fast. Fast results? With over 20 years of counseling people on healthy lifestyle, usually the answer is slow deliberate mindful changes. Whether you are talking about healthy movement, owning your choices of the food that you eat, creating a sleep plan, managing stress, or living in a place of gratitude and joy. Most of these things are not achieved quickly. They take weeks, months and years of good habit making, possibly untangling years of bad habits. So here’s to the Slow going consistent, not sexy, daily choices that build on each other to make a healthy lifestyle.
