What to know about nutrition counseling, medical nutrition therapy, insurance coverage, and telehealth.
The short answer to the question is yes (mostly)! Many health insurance plans cover visits with a registered dietitian, particularly when nutrition counseling is considered medically necessary for the treatment or management of a health condition.
Nutrition Advantage provides individual nutrition counseling both in our Dayton-area office and through telehealth for eligible clients throughout Ohio.
Insurance coverage varies by insurance plan, diagnosis, and individual benefits. Examples of conditions that are usually covered include Diabetes and Prediabetes, Weight management, High cholesterol and Triglycerides, High blood pressure, Digestive/GI concerns, Heart health and Disordered Eating.
It is important to note that plans vary greatly. If your insurance company generally covers dietitian services, your plan may have deductibles, copays, coinsurance or visit limits. The good news is that typically, a referral is not required. Being insured by a company that we participate with does not necessarily guarantee that your individual plan will cover every nutrition visit. With that in mind, we suggest reaching out to your plan for your specific coverage.
Can I See a Dietitian Through Telehealth?
Yes! Nutrition Advantage Dietitians offer individual nutrition therapy through telehealth, making it possible for eligible clients to meet with a registered dietitian from the comfort of home. If you live in Ohio, we can see you for telehealth appointments!
What is MNT?

As a client of our practice, you will not receive a generic diet plan. Instead, you will receive a personalized nutrition plan that considers your preferences with achievable goals along with the support and coaching needed to succeed.
